The best counter to the teleological argument that I’ve come across (though I can’t for the life of me remember where) is simply to point out that we recognize design by contrasting it with things that are not designed. So finding a watch in a designed universe would be wholly unremarkable, since there would be no meaningful difference between that watch and everything else.
